The Stonewall Riots

In 1969, homosexuality was criminalised in most parts of the United States, and LGBTQ+ people faced constant harassment and discrimination. On a sweltering June night, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in New York City. What was supposed to be a routine raid turned into a full-scale rebellion. Patrons, fed up with years of oppression, fought back against the officers. The Stonewall Riots, as they came to be known, became a turning point in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

From Protest to Pride

The Stonewall Riots sparked a new wave of activism. Just one year later, in 1970, the first Pride marches took place in New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. These marches were not just about celebrating LGBTQ+ identity; they were a powerful demand for equal rights. Participants chanted slogans, held signs, and proudly marched through the streets, taking a stand against societal norms.

Pride Around the World
